avformat-58.dll
In the vast majority of cases, the solution is to properly reinstall avformat-58.dll on your PC, to the Windows system folder. Alternatively, some programs, notably PC games, require that the DLL file is placed in the game/application installation folder.
Most avformat-58.dll errors are the result of missing or corrupt versions of the DLL file that was bundled with Shotcut. As a first troubleshootiong step, most PC professionals will attempt to replace the applicable version of the DLL file. In addition, if your avformat-58.dll error was due to a removed malware infection, we recommend running a registry scan to clean up any invalid file path references created by the malicious program.
If you've successfully replaced the file in the right location, your issues with avformat-58.dll should be resolved. We recommend running a quick test to confirm that's the case. We recommend re-loading Shotcut to test for the issue.
Shotcut-related avformat-58.dll issues happen during installation, when avformat-58.dll-related software is running, startup/shutdown, or during the Windows installation process. It's important to note when avformat-58.dll issues happen, as it helps troubleshoot Shotcut problems (and report to Meltytech, LLC.).
Improper computer shutdowns or malware-infected avformat-58.dll files can cause issues with Shotcut, leading to corrupt errors. Corrupt avformat-58.dll files prevent correct loading, which leads to Shotcut or avformat-58.dll error messages.

FFmpeg container format library files such as avformat-58.dll utilize the DLL file extension. This file is considered a Win64 DLL (Dynamic link library) file, and was first created by Open Broadcaster Software for the FFmpeg software package.
Avformat-58.dll is considered a type of Dynamic Link Library (DLL) file. Dynamic Link Library files, like avformat-58.dll, are essentially a "guide book" that stores information and instructions for executable (EXE) files - like mighost.exe - to follow. These files were created so that multiple programs (eg. OBS Studio) could share the same avformat-58.dll file, saving valuable memory allocation, therefore making your computer run more efficiently.
Unfortunately, what makes DLL files so convenient and efficient, also makes them extremely vulnerable to problems. If something happens to a shared DLL file, either it goes missing or gets corrupted in some way, it can generate a "runtime" error message. Runtime is pretty self-explanatory; it means that these errors are triggered when avformat-58.dll is attempted to be loaded either when OBS Studio is starting up, or in some cases already running. Some of the most common avformat-58.dll errors include:
Your avformat-58.dll file could be missing due to accidental deletion, uninstalled as a shared file of another program (shared with OBS Studio), or deleted by a malware infection. Furthermore, avformat-58.dll file corruption could be caused from a power outage when loading OBS Studio, system crash while loading avformat-58.dll, bad sectors on your storage media (usually your primary hard drive), or quite commonly, a malware infection. Thus, it's critical to make sure your anti-virus is kept up-to-date and scanning regularly.
If you're encountering one of the error messages above, follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve your avformat-58.dll issue. These troubleshooting steps are listed in the recommended order of execution.
When the first two steps haven't solved your issue, it might be a good idea to run Windows Update. Many avformat-58.dll error messages that are encountered can be contributed to an outdated Windows Operating System. To run Windows Update, please follow these easy steps:
If none of the previous three troubleshooting steps have resolved your issue, you can try a more aggressive approach (Note: Not recommended for amateur PC users) by downloading and replacing your appropriate avformat-58.dll file version. We maintain a comprehensive database of 100% malware-free avformat-58.dll files for every applicable version of OBS Studio. Please follow the steps below to download and properly replace you file:
GEEK TIP : We must emphasize that reinstalling Windows will be a very time-consuming and advanced task to resolve avformat-58.dll problems. To avoid data loss, you must be sure that you have backed-up all of your important documents, pictures, software installers, and other personal data before beginning the process. If you are not currently backing up your data, you need to do so immediately.
CAUTION : We strongly advise against downloading and copying avformat-58.dll to your appropriate Windows system directory. Open Broadcaster Software typically does not release OBS Studio DLL files for download because they are bundled together inside of a software installer. The installer's task is to ensure that all correct verifications have been made before installing and placing avformat-58.dll and all other DLL files for OBS Studio. An incorrectly installed DLL file may create system instability and could cause your program or operating system to stop functioning altogether. Proceed with caution.
In Audacity's Preferences > Libraries, there is an option to use FFmpeg's libraries. Under Help > Diagnostics > Show log, Audacity seems to be looking for one of three versions of avformat-NN.dll: avformat-58.dll, avformat-57.dll, or avformat-55.dll
In the file, "ffmpeg-4.4.1-full_build-shared.7z", on gyan.dev for the previous release of ffmpeg, 4.4.1, \bin includes avformat-58.dll, which seems to be what Audacity is looking for. It has avcodec-58.dll, not avcodec-56.dll, though. I suspect that if I look through prior releases of FFmpeg, I will find avcodec-56.dll.
