hooked in by a familiar sentiment, romantic or otherwise, whether for yourself or someone you love, its easy to fall into the trap of seeing no better way to take care of your problems than to surrender them to somebody else. its a common trope throughout fiction, and not just in squid game. its also a problem for cornell, who tries to rebuild his life, and is encouraged by his girlfriend, sascha (jenna fischer), who is just as single-minded as he is.

the squid game movie starts off like a typical set-up, albeit a quite shameless one. of course, cornell isnt exactly a welcomed guest at this party, and immediately after pulling all the strings to get his friends here, he tries to sneak out. the guests discover him and track him down into the kitchen, where he is cornered by snake (robert loggia) and the greek (mickey rooney), who threaten him with none other than simon (kirk morris), cornell's evil twin brother.
over the course of the movie, the film deviates into far more surreal territory than mere happenstance and consequences could have dictated. theres a moment when cornell hosts a luau in the jungle, complete with an endangered kangaroo, a couple of wacky guests and a nude and cryptic woman in a sultry dance number. there are other dramatic moments, and some funny ones, and its all in the service of the squid game. yet at the core of it all, the film is about romance.
in a shockingly-strong showing for a comedy, adam sandler takes on the role of a con man who only wants one thing: to become a billionaire. good thing he is going after kyle rearden (chris rock) because hes a true basketball legend. the pair seek out each other in hopes of impressing the press with their respective tales of basketball excess. unsurprisingly, theyd rather get the whole story behind the character to help market their screenplays rather than play a basketball game. of course, the james arness aficionado cant turn down an opportunity to play uncle sam at the hoop. let the hooping begin!
